The Round About Story of Mr. Inflation Man by Amy Digi

Mr. Inflation Man by Amy Digi, Oil on linen, 22 × 28”

As my stepchildren grew up, and with my son approaching double digits, I’m finding more time for myself. While my time was once filled with reading books to kids at home or at the library, transporting newly employed stepkids to and from NYC in their first “real” jobs or college, or spending time at playgrounds and playgroups, I now fill my time with learning.

My newly acquired knowledge occurred after completing a BFA and MFA , the former concentrated in Art Education and the latter in painting. Both degrees lacked a strong focus in anything regarding finance, not to mention that Bitcoin didn’t exist yet.

While we all get to where we are going when we get there, artists usually take the road less traveled, or wander in circles, compared to the often more direct route of the average business person. Having had many adventures, I think I fast-tracked my street smarts and combined learning about fiat and bitcoin from a frog, a simple book and my love of art. The result is my painting of Mr. Inflation Man.

Kane Mayfield, Keysa Luna and the Sargent book all took turns in front of my eyes this past spring and throughout the summer. After pursing each book, my mind would start connecting the dots and one day I had an “OH FUDGE” moment.

Up until this point, I had told my son to save his money. I thought I was being a financially savvy Mom. His birthday/holiday money was split in two – half for saving and half for spending. It wasn’t until I saw a chart in Keysa’s book on page 19 visually comparing money saved with its value thirty years later that it really hit me: savers get punished! Was I setting my son up for failure? Indeed I was, one hundred percent. I was mad as a hornet demanding answers! Who? Who decided this?!

Pepe schooled me, and I began to find some answers in the pages of Kane’s book and a little get together on Jekyll Island. Words were forming ideas, and ideas were floating around my brain when I saw John Sargent’s painting, Joseph Jefferson as Dr Pangloss. In my minds eye, this is what I thought those fellas over on Jekyll Island looked like. It didn’t matter to me if I was correct or not, because my painter-self took over and ran with the idea.

In my sleep, I would see this crazy mofo, balding in the middle with wild hair around the outer region of his skull, making decisions regarding money for me, and now I’ve infected my son with this crazy saving-failing policy. I sat with this idea, night after night, until it leapt out of my brushes. This man, closest to the money, made it rain with his dollar-shooter while buying fancy jewelry, and all the while my son was getting punished for saving and losing his almighty dollar power.

It was painted without tracing, without a projection. It was painted by sight with anger in my blood. This artwork came from the depths of a Mother’s fury. My son would not be set up for failure, not even by me with my so-called “good intentions”. I’m not saying that I taught him to go all-in on Bitcoin, he’s nine for goodness sake. I’m saying he still spends, but the formula has changed – a third spent on whatever he decides, a third saved in fiat and now a third saved in Bitcoin.

Thank you Keysa, Kane, Sargent and Satoshi. I’m a work in progress. The key word is progress. We all made a difference in my son’s life xo
